Dr. Bill McKoy to preach on 8/28 at Pleasant Grove’s Homecoming!

This Sunday, August 28, 2011, Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church celebrates its 68^th year.  Dr. Bill McKoy, who served Pleasant Grove as the Gainesville District Superintendent from 1980-‘84, will preach during the 10:30 a.m. worship service.  During those early years, Pleasant Grove was a part of the “Upper Dawson Circuit,” a 3-church charge with nearby McKee’s Chapel and Wesley Chapel.  Some of Pleasant Grove’s current members remember those days well and are quite excited about re-connecting with Dr. McKoy.  Celebrating Homecoming 2011 continues, after the traditional covered dish luncheon, with a 1:00 p.m. community ‘singing!’

 "Homecoming Day at Pleasant Grove is always special," says Pastor Jim Garvin, "and Dr. Bill’s appearance this year will be a true blessing."  During his career Dr. McKoy served a number of churches in the North Georgia Conference, including Cleveland UMC, Athens 1^st UMC, Stone Mountain UMC, and Cokesbury UMC.  He also served as the associate pastor of Marietta 1^st and College Park UMC’s.  During the 1960’s, he was the NG Conference Director of Youth Work and Director of Camp Glisson.  He now serves as a professor with the Candler School of Theology’s Course of Study program.  He and his wife Martha of 21 years, reside in Decatur, GA, have six children and 11 grandchildren, and worship at Glenn Memorial UMC on the Emory campus.

Sound Decision

This year’s Homecoming celebration also includes music provided by the Sound Decision, a barbershop quartet out of Cumming, GA.”  Officially registered with the Barbershop Harmony Society, the group is led by Dick Rockwell and includes Chuck Berry (bass), Bob Hitch (tenor), and Sam Frankhouser (baritone).

We invite folks from the past as well as our newer friends to bring a covered dish to share and enjoy a great message, inspiring music, wonderful fellowship, and delicious food!

           

Pleasant Grove UMC's address is 219 Hwy 52 West, Dahlonega, GA 30533. The church is located just five miles south of the historic Lumpkin County Courthouse. Dr. Phil DeMore to preach during Pleasant Grove’s Homecoming

Sunday, August 22, 2010, Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church celebrates its 67^th year. Dr. Phil DeMore, who served Pleasant Grove during the years 1962-1964, will preach at the 10:30 a.m. worship service during this year’s Homecoming celebration! For those years in the early sixties, Reverend DeMore was assigned to what was called the “Upper Dawson Circuit,” which included two other churches (McKee’s Chapel and Wesley Chapel). Some of Pleasant Grove’s current members remember those days well and are quite excited about seeing Rev. DeMore once again in Pleasant Grove’s pulpit. Celebrating Homecoming 2010 continues, after the traditional covered dish lunch, with a 1:15 community ‘singing!’

“Homecoming Day at Pleasant Grove is always special,” says Pastor Jim Garvin, “and Dr. Phil’s appearance this year makes it even more so. During his career he served a number of churches in the North Georgia Conference, including Jackson UMC, Snellville UMC, and Gainesville 1^st UMC. He also served as Superintendent of the Dalton District and the Atlanta-Emory District; and he received the Harry Denman Award for Evangelism.

Dr.. DeMore is a graduate of Young Harris College, NGCSU, Emory University; and United Theological Seminary where he earned his PhD. He and his wife of 45 years, Lu Carol (Cason), reside in Clarkesville, GA and have two daughters, Leslie and Laura, and several grandchildren.”

“We expect to see a lot of folks from the past—family and friends of those who have belonged to Pleasant Grove at one time or another. Many ‘newer’ friends are also coming to help us celebrate, and of course…eat the food! Our church has a “dinner on the grounds” typically the last Sunday of the month, (except for this year). A special covered dish meal will be set out under the pavilion and there is always enough for all!”

Time stands still… pastor who served during 1952-1953 to preach…

After a 56 year absence, the Reverend Gene Brown comes back ‘home,’ to Pleasant Grove, to preach at this year’s Homecoming celebration! Rev. Brown actually served three other churches at the same time (Methodists call that a ‘four point charge’) during that one year. The other churches were McKee’s Chapel, Wesley Chapel and one that didn’t survive. Members (and sisters) Betty Seabolt and Bonnie Freeland remember those days well and are quite excited about seeing Rev. Brown once again in Pleasant Grove’s pulpit at the 10:30 a.m. worship service. Celebrating Homecoming 2009 continues, after lunch, with a 1:00 community ‘singing!’

“This year’s Homecoming Day is extra special,” says Pastor Jim Garvin, “because of Gene's appearance. He still loves flying and keeps his license current. He and his wife Sara have four children (Mike, Vickie, Sharon, and Tim) and maintain a home in Alpharetta.” Rev. Brown is presently serving as the pastor of Piedmont UMC in nearby Cumming.
